RESPECT AMONG WOLVES - El Solitario

RESPECT AMONG WOLVES

FÉLIX RODRÍGUEZ DE LA FUENTE
(1928-1980)

If anyone has dedicated his life to respecting, loving and fighting for wolves, it is Félix Rodriguez de la Fuente. Naturalist and environmentalist, this man became the Spanish standard bearer for the defense of nature, teaching a whole country the value of our fauna and flora thanks to the radio and television documentaries he produced.

There would probably be far fewer wolves left today, or none at all, if it were not for the tenacity and passion that this man put into understanding and defending this magnificent animal.

His message is not only still valid, it is innovative and provides precious elements to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and unsustainable development. He was a forerunner of what is now known as rewilding. He was not just content to protect. He wanted to reconquer empty Spain by recovering the bison, the aurochs and the tarpan (the bull and the wild horse). But he went further, he also wanted to recover man. The Paleolithic Magdalenian European who painted them in Altamira. In him I saw the capacities and the cosmovision we need to build the information and knowledge society.

The plane accident that took his life, while he was filming a documentary in the snowy lands of Alaska, could not prevent his work from continuing. In only 15 years of pioneering and fruitful work, he provoked such an interest in the free and wild that, after his death, he left behind an army of young people willing to follow in his footsteps and devote their lives to the defense of wildlife.

And it is his legacy that we are now protecting as well, helping our wolf brothers to continue to survive.
